In this presentation, we examine auroral electrojet AL-index bursts during substorms and show how the enhancement of ionospheric electrojet currents shares similarities with crackling noise observed in front propagation models. Our findings make a significant contribution to understanding the small-scale dynamics of the magnetospheric plasma sheet and the mechanisms driving magnetospheric substorms.
