Abstract
Microscopic deformable objects can migrate in fluid flows, through a combination of swimming and sailing. If the swimmer is sufficiently parsimonious, this could be achieved without the need of internal energy sources or external drives: the swimmer extracts the energy it needs for the swimming strokes directly from the external flow. Optimal migration strategies in various flow geometries can be determined in the case of simple swimmers, such as deformable trimers and dumbbells.
