Abstract
Von Neumann's expansion problem describes stationary states of optimal growth of autocatalytic networks with M reagents and N reactions. We present a survey of the statistical mechanics approach to the calculation of optimal growth rates, which describes the limit N,M->infinity with n=N/M fixed. We focus on ensemble properties of the solutions on random graphs with different topologies and on the solutions for a single instance, specifically the metabolic network of e. coli.
