Using a model for internal restructuring in granular media, we show that an alternative scenario to self-organized criticality is self-organized structuring where large scale space and/or time instability may induce very different features, namely the occurrence of a peaked distribution of large events with a well-defined frequency of occurrence and possible spatial inhomogeneity. We discuss the generality of such a scenario for other models which were initially claimed to be self-organized critical.
